Holy baptism
Lutheran belief on baptism
Holy baptism is a blessed sacrament that Christ entrusts to His Church (Matthew 28:20). It is a means of grace, delivering forgiveness of sin (Acts 2:38; 22:16) and delivering rebirth and regeneration to all who believe (John 3:5-6; Titus 3:5-8). Infants, as sinners (Psalm 51:5; Ephesians 2:3), are to receive these gifts for even they can believe (Psalm 8:2; Matthew 18:6; 21:16).
Preparing parents for the child's baptism
As Christian parents are responsible for their child's upbringing in the faith (Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4), they are to bring them to the font for Holy Baptism (Acts 2:39). This is only the beginning as they are to be brought up in the faith and at the services of God's house. Sponsors (godparents) should be chosen with great care. They are practicing Christians and should be members in good standing of an Evangelical Lutheran congregation.
If you wish for your children to be baptized at our church, we would ask you to make an appointment with one of our pastors for instruction.
Preparing for adult baptism
Adult baptism is preceded by a period of catechesis or instruction, during which you will learn the basics of the Christian faith. If you wish to be baptized at our church, we would ask you to make an appointment with one of our pastors to receive adequate instruction in the Christian faith.
